Batik Workshop
Join artist Jo Whiteland for a Batik Workshop.
Jo discovered her passion for batik whilst in Kota Baharu on the East coast of Malaysia and since then has gone on to develop her own style. She now works from her garden studio in North Bristol creating vibrant colourful batiks of the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it - from morning dog walks on the Downs to holidays around the British Coast and further afield, all inspire and feature in her designs.
Time: 9:30am - 4:30pm
Her original batiks are created on white cotton lawn fabric using traditional wax pens and brushes to apply the hot wax before painting on dyes to build up layers of intense colour. A final dip in the dye bath creates the crackle effect characteristic of batik.
Spend the day learning the art of batik. We will be applying wax onto white cotton fabric and painting with silk dyes before re-applying wax and dip-dyeing in a dye bath to create the characteristic batik crackle. Bring your own design or use one of the designs available.
Max class size is 10 people so there will be plenty of opportunity for individual tuition. You will go away with your own individual piece of batik approx size 37cm x 45cm plus instructions on how to finish to make a beautiful picture.
These day workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
Cost: £65 per person - including admission to Slimbridge Wetland Centre and a £5 refreshments voucher to spend in the Kingfisher Kitchen or kiosks.
